BIW announces 42 new layoffs

Workers given reprieve from layoffs in August are back on notice as Bath Iron Works has announced 42 layoffs scheduled to take effect Oct. 11. The Bangor Daily News reported the layoffs will affect insulators and pipe coverers.

Shipyard spokesman Jim DeMartini said company officials are still trying to find other work for the 42 employees to avert the layoffs, as the company did for the layoffs announced in August.

DeMartini said the layoffs reflect a typical fluctuation in the work force based on changing demand from projects under way.

Separately, the company also learned Friday that it would get a contract modification worth $13.3 million to complete work on the deckhouse of the DDG-1000, a new high-tech class of Navy destroyer.
