BIW to lay off 73

Bath Iron Works said Friday it is laying off 73 employees because of a workload slowdown.

BIW officials said 73 people on its production team will lose their jobs by Feb. 1, when the shipyard is scheduled to complete the last ship in the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers, the Associated Press reported.

The shipyard may cut more jobs in coming months because it's still negotiating with the Navy on its next project, a ship in the DDG-1000 Zumwalt class, the AP said.
