BIW-union begin contract talks

Bath Iron Works and its largest labor union began hashing out a new contract yesterday, despite the fact that the union continues to deal with internal issues, including the suspension of three officers by its parent organization.

The current four-year contract between the ship builder and the 3,400-member Local S6 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union expires May 18, according to the Times Record in Brunswick. The major issues are health care costs, retirement security and wages, according to the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, local union members gathered at the union hall Monday to ask R. Thomas Buffenbarger, the president of the IAMAW, who was in town to help launch the new contract talks, about the fates of ousted Local S6 President Mike Keenan and his elected leadership team, who are accused of financial mismanagement and having pornography on union computers. Buffenbarger, who appointed a trial committee to look into the allegations, was not available, but International Representative Tom Holl told union members no decision had been made yet.
