The International Associaiton of Machinists and Aerospace Workers will not restore local control of Local S6, the largest union at Bath Iron Works, after an investigation substantiated claims of fiscal mismanagement and widespread viewing of pornography on union computers, the Associated Press is reporting.
In a letter sent to Local S6 members, and acquired by the AP, International President Thomas Buffenbarger wrote that an investigation by a union committee found sufficient evidence to support charges of shoddy accounting, including the failure to account for $27,000 in union merchandise; widespread viewing of pornography on union computers; and the failure to deal with grievances in a timely manner.Local S6, which has 3,600 members at BIW, has been in receivership since the international union placed a trustee in charge of Local S6 in March.
At the time, it suspended 10 locally elected leaders, including President Mike Keenan. All but three local leaders have been reinstated, but Keenan remains suspended. The international union's decision to keep the local chapter in receivership does not address the issue of the suspended leadership, union spokesman John Carr told the AP.
