Sawmill closes, 44 laid off

Irving Forest Products Inc. will permanently close its Pinkham Sawmill in Nashville Plantation by the end of the month because of the weak economy.

Mill officials cited a slumping housing market, soaring transportation and energy costs and a decrease in lumber demand and prices due to a drop in U.S. home construction, according to the Bangor Daily News. The mill's closure was expedited by an electrical fire that broke out Monday, the paper said. Irving in January closed the mill for an "indefinite" period of time, but reopened it in June.

Sixty-four employees work at the plant, and some will likely be moved to the company's Dixfield sawmill and woodlands operation. A total of 44 will lose their jobs, the paper reported.
