BIW's largest union under investigation

A local union that represents nearly 3,500 employees at Bath Iron Works is under investigation by its parent organization.

John Carr, a spokesman for the Washington, D.C.-based International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, told Mainebiz this morning that the IAMAW has taken over day-to-day operations of Local S6, the largest union at BIW, but would not discuss the investigation in detail except to say it stems from protests made over a recent election of local officers. Mike Keenan, the now-suspended president of Local S6, told the Times Record that the investigation may involve the union's "financials." The IAMAW seized several computers from Local S6's office in February, and was "shocked and disturbed with the pornography that has been found on them during our initial review," according to a letter the union sent to its local union members, and acquired by the Times Record.

The IAMAW has suspended eight elected officers of Local S6, Carr said. Bath Iron Works has placed those eight officers on paid administrative leave, according to Jim DeMartini, a spokesman for BIW.
