Blueberry prices drop

The price for wild blueberries has fallen about 40% this year, due to last season's good crop and the shaky economy.

Blueberry crop value has enjoyed a few years of increasing prices, and last year the value jumped 38% over 2006 to $83 million, according to the Bangor Daily News. But prices for blueberries have dropped to nearly $0.60 a pound, compared to $1.07 a pound last year. This year's crop is estimated to be 90 million pounds, more than the average 75 million pounds for the last few years.

David Bell of the Wild Blueberry Association of Maine called the price drop "the natural flex of the market," and told the paper that a healthy bumper crop in Maine and Canada, coupled with a poor economy that couldn't support the high price of blueberries, is the reason for this year's decline.
