Hotel developer Tom Walsh has acquired a final, critical parcel along Bar Harbor's commercial waterfront.
Ed and Anne Damm have agreed to sell the Song of the Sea shop at 47 West St. to Walsh, the owner of Portsmouth-based Ocean Properties, which already owns four hotels in Bar Harbor and has lately made news as the potential developer of Portland's Maine State Pier. In Bar Harbor, Walsh or one of his LLCs have now, with the Song of the Sea agreement, purchased all private property on West Street between Town Pier and Rodick Street in downtown Bar Harbor, according to the Bar Harbor Times. (For more on Walsh's plans for Bar Harbor, read the September 2008 Mainebiz article "Changing tides.")
The Damms had operated the Song of the Sea music store since 1983 and had been critical of Walsh's acquisitions in part because they were concerned fishermen would lose access to the beach near their shop. A spokesman for Walsh's Bar Harbor properties told the paper the sale is expected to be completed by the end of December. A sale price was not reported, but the property and building were assessed in 2006 at $495,300.
Walsh has announced preliminary plans for a 120-room upscale hotel across the street from the shop, but his spokesperson says he has no immediate plans to redevelop the side of West Street where Song of the Sea is located, though Walsh in September told a town board he hopes to redevelop that stretch, the Bar Harbor Times reported.
Ok?! So where is the MUSIC STORE now?! 😭😭💔
