Kasa hotel group is opening a 20-bed boutique hotel this month in the redeveloped Spinning Mill in downtown Skowhegan.

The Skowhegan by Kasa will be part of an overall redevelopment of the old Spinning Mill, which had a long history as a textile mill and manufacturing site, built along the Kennebec River.

The 80,000-square-foot mill was renovated by Bangor-based High Tide Capital. Pike Project Development, which has repurposed multiple properties in Orono and Bangor as well, was the general contractor.

Renovations had a setback during a December 2023 storm, which flooded the Kennebec River and affected communities and businesses around Maine. At the time, developer Dash Davidson, with High Tide Capital, told Mainebiz that the basement took on five feet of water and caused an estimated $3 million in damage.

In addition to the Kasa hotel, the circa 1922 Spinning Mill will be home to 41 residential units, office space and a fitness center. A 5,000-square-foot rooftop deck overlooks the Kennebec River and dam.

The building will also have a farm-to-table restaurant and a brewery tasting room run by Skowhegan-based Maine Grains, projected to open in June. Hotel rooms are outfitted with a kitchenette.

"Reimagining the Spinning Mill into a beautiful property designed for the modern traveler is an exciting milestone for us,” said Roman Pedan, CEO and founder of Kasa. "This transformation goes beyond revitalizing a historic building. It's about creating a premier destination that seamlessly blends heritage with modern hospitality. We're excited to introduce a space that enhances the town's tourism and economic landscape.”

New York city-based Kasa has more than 85 hotels across the U.S. This is the company’s first for Maine.
