Campsite reservations up

The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands says camping reservations in Maine are at a record high for this early in the year.

The total reservations taken for the past two months is 4,511, an increase of almost 300 over the same time last year, according to the Portland Press Herald. The total includes Maine's 12 parks with campsites.

Almost 700 more camping nights have been reserved this year than at the same time last year, to 21,084 nights so far in 2008. Will Harris, parks and lands director, believes more Mainers are choosing to vacation close to home because of gas prices, the paper reported.
