Oakhurst goes solar

Oakhurst Dairy plans to install one of New England's largest commercial solar energy systems at its Portland headquarters.

Oakhurst on Friday said it will install 2,700 sq. ft. of solar panels on the roof of its main office in an effort to reduce its carbon emissions by 20% by 2010. The panels will produce the equivalent of 7,500 gallons of oil per year.

Ascendant Energy, a solar energy firm in Rockland, will install the panels starting April 14 and finish the job by the end of May, according to Kurt Penney, vice president of the firm. The Oakhurst project is the firm's largest to date and "is absolutely one of the largest in New England," Penney told Mainebiz this morning.

The dairy will formally announce the project at a press conference Thursday
