Coastal pockets of prosperity

Maine’s coastline is one of its biggest tourist draws and one of its most complex areas.

This issue focuses on areas Downeast and on the Midcoast that have seen good times and bad times, but are seeing positive growth of late.

Our cover story, by Senior Writer Laurie Schreiber, looks at the growth of Machias, a Washington County town of 2,102 whose median household income is $20,156, according to the U.S. Census. With its young people moving away, the infrastructure crumbling and the downtown in flux, residents and business leaders fought back. The story focuses on Machias Savings Bank’s new $5 million headquarters, new merchants in town and efforts to upgrade the airport and streets and sidewalks. For the betterment of the community. Story starts on Page 14.

Also Downeast, Jasper Wyman & Son, a processor of Maine wild blueberries, has new leadership and a new line of products, with a new way of promoting them. Renee Cordes, a senior writer, sat down with CEO Tony Shurman to talk about how the company has navigated the industry’s challenges while developing new products. See Page 18.

On the “Downwest” coast, as Senior Writer Maureen Milliken likes to call it, Brunswick Landing has gone through its own transition in the past decade, from the decommissioning of the Navy base to the transition to a mixed-use site with office space, light industrial, housing and retail. As Maureen reports, Brunswick Landing is headed into another phase of development. See Page 22.
