Council wants more tourism jobs

The Governor's Council on Maine's Quality of Place yesterday released a report that includes 10 recommendations to drive job growth in Maine.

In the report, "Quality of Place and Job Growth," the council recommends Maine's university and community college systems help develop the tourism industry by adding workforce education and training in the hospitality and leisure industry. The report also urges Maine's universities and colleges to strengthen academic programs in community planning, architectural design, historic preservation, and traditional and contemporary crafts.

The council recommended, too, that the state deepen its Maine Landowner Relations Program to ensure continued public access to private land.

The council's first report, "People, Place and Prosperity," was released in December and promoted landscape conservation and community revitalization to sharpen Maine's appeal as a place to live, visit, work, vacation or retire.
