Cruise season ends

The cruise ship season in Portland closes Tuesday with the arrival of Carnival's Royal Princess, while farther north, Bar Harbor closed out its season last week with a record number of visits.

The Royal Princess is expected to bring more than 700 passengers to Portland, on its journey from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Boston, according to Portland television station WCSH 6. The television station reported that 31 cruise ships brought more than 45,000 visitors to the Portland area in 2008, with 38 ships scheduled to visit next year.

In Bar Harbor, a new record was set for that port with 97 cruise ship visits in 2008, according to the Bar Harbor Times. The old record of 91 was set last year.

A record 108 cruise ship visits had been scheduled for this year, but 11 of those visits were canceled because of bad weather, according to the paper.
