Darling's Waterfront Pavilion takes a new name

Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion, the 16,000-seat Bangor amphitheater in the final stages of a multiyear renovation, has a new name.

Maine Savings Federal Credit Union on Tuesday announced it has secured naming rights for the pavilion, and that it will now be called Maine Savings Amphitheater. Terms of an agreement with the venue’s owner, Old Town-based Waterfront Concerts, were not disclosed in a news release.

Nicknamed “The Maine Savings Amp,” the arena on the bank of the Penobscot River is preparing to debut a new look for next season. Among the improvements are the addition of luxury suites, upgraded seating and concessions and new, permanent bathrooms. The season begins in June 2022.

The upgrade was originally estimated to cost around $8 million but is expected to be substantially more due to the increasing costs of materials and labor, Waterfront Concerts founder and owner Alex Gray recently told Mainebiz in an interview.

“Maine Savings is proud to support Waterfront Concerts in bringing the biggest names in music and entertainment to the Bangor Region,” John Reed, CEO of Maine Savings FCU, said in the release. “The Maine Savings Amp will help to promote our community as a go-to destination for years to come and drive positive growth for our local businesses.”

Gray added, “We are grateful for this partnership, the Bangor community, and all our sponsors and partners since we began on the Bangor Waterfront in 2010. Without support from local businesses like Maine Savings, we wouldn’t have been able to bring world-class music to our backyard.”

With roughly $520 million in assets, Maine Savings is the second-largest credit union in the state, according to the 2021 Mainebiz Book of Lists. Founded in 1961, Maine Savings serves almost 32,000 members, operates 11 branches and employs 150 people.
