December unemployment inches up

Unemployment in December rose slightly, ending 2009 at 8.3%.

The preliminary seasonally-adjusted rate increased over November's 8.0% and was well above December 2008's 6.5%, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Labor. The number of unemployed Mainers was 58,300 for December, a 12,000 increase from one year ago.

The national unemployment rate for December was 10%, unchanged from November and an increase over 7.4% in December 2008, according to the release.
