DHL troubles hit Maine

An international delivery company has closed facilities in Brewer and Presque Isle, blaming losses from its U.S. operations.

DHL, a delivery service owned by the German company Deutsche Post World Net, closed the two Maine branches in late June. Notices posted at the locations said, "Current operation losses in the U.S. are unacceptable and require a restructuring of our operations to reduce costs," according to the Bangor Daily News. In May, Deutsche Post announced it would cut at least 1,500 jobs in North America and hire its rival, UPS, for air-cargo services, according to The New York Times.

The Brewer location was operated for DHL by Pennsylvania-based Rydbom Express, which told the paper it was "mandated" to close by DHL. Rydbom said 25 employees at the Brewer location were given 30 days' notice and a flat "retention bonus" for their service. An unspecified number of employees were affected by the closure in Presque Isle.
