Downtown group introduces Ellsworth-specific safety signs

Courtesy / Heart of Ellsworth A new initiative to support Ellsworth’s downtown business community rolled out in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Downtown Ellsworth businesses rolled out unified messaging last week that features an Ellsworth-specific poster of the state’s voluntary COVID-19 prevention badge and the new phrase “Stay wEllsworth.”

A second sign indicates shopping options that are available to customers depending on if they have a mask or not, according to a news release.

The initiative, implemented in time for Memorial Day weekend, was a result of weekly downtown check-in calls organized by the Heart of Ellsworth to support the business community during the pandemic.

A subgroup of business owners and community members created the messaging with the pro-bono graphic design assistance of state Rep. Nicole Grohoski of Ellsworth. City staff and the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce also contributed to content development.

“While it is a different kind of reopening, it is exciting to see our downtown businesses reopening for the summer,” Cara Romano, Heart of Ellsworth’s executive director, said. “They’ve taken great care to welcome customers back following the Maine CDC guidelines. Heart of Ellsworth is proud to support their efforts by helping spread the message to customers that it’s possible to both shop downtown and stay well.”

The posters are available for download on the Heart of Ellsworth website to businesses and organizations in Ellsworth following Maine CDC guidelines.

In response to the  pandemic, the organization partnered with Machias Savings Bank to support the Main Street business community by offering weekly ZOOM check-ins to connect community leaders and small business owners. The check-ins are designed to identify opportunities and creative solutions to changes the pandemic poses to the city’s way of life and approach to business, according to its website.

The Department of Economic and Community Development created badges for businesses that have used the state’s COVID-19 checklist and filled out a compliance form. The badges are designed to voluntarily post on business doors, website or social media channels to help instill consumer confidence in their operations.
