Drug makers, others gave $4M to Maine doctors

A new federal database shows that around 850 Maine doctors received more than $4 million in legal payments from pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers in 2013.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the searchable database is part of the federal Open Payments program that was created under the Affordable Care Act. Types of compensation listed includes travel, consulting and other gifts made between August and December 2013.

Compensation to doctors in Maine amounted to $1.42 million in general payments and $2.74 million for research-related payments. However, the newspaper noted that at least one doctor was surprised to see herself listed for a transaction that was never made.
