Maine medical lab gets $12.9M contract

Massachusetts-based Alere, a medical diagnostics company, has won a $12.9 million government contract to develop a new test for pandemic influenza at its Maine lab.

Alere announced that it entered into the three-and-a-half-year contract with the U.S. Department of Health Human Services’ Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority on Wednesday.

Iris Shaffer, a spokeswoman representing the company, said in an email that Alere’s lab in Scarborough will develop the “rapid, molecular, low-cost influenza diagnostic device” that will support the federal authority’s preparedness for a pandemic. The company said the test is expected to provide molecular results in less than 15 minutes, making it appropriate for point-of-care diagnosis in a number of settings.
