Energy efficiency upgrades to save Maine Machine $100,000 annually

Maine Machine Products Co. in South Paris says a recently completed upgrade to its heating, ventilating and air conditioning system, along with the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting, is expected to cut its energy usage by 40%.

The improvements are expected to save the precision manufacturer $100,000 a year in energy costs.

Maine Machine Products, Thayer Corp. in Auburn and Transformative Wave in Kent, Wash., marked the completion with an event Friday with U.S. Sen. Angus King.

King, who toured the facility Friday, said in a statement that the project highlights the importance of energy efficiency in Maine and demonstrates how the state can make its manufacturing sector more competitive.

“Energy bills in Maine are too high and it hurts families whose budgets are stretched and it hurts businesses that can’t grow or create jobs as a result,” King said. “The single best way to reduce those bills is to reduce consumption because the cheapest kilowatt hour is the one never used.”

The new HVAC technology, the first of its kind in Maine, according to the Thayer Corp., was installed by Thayer’s newly launched Energy Services Group. The system, installed with the help of an Efficiency Maine incentive program, uses intelligent controls to fluctuate the heating and cooling system’s damper speed as needed.

Thayer Corp. President Dan Thayer said in a statement that his company will focus on replicating the project throughout Maine, where there are a number of of aging roof-top HVAC units on manufacturing facilities, warehouses and big-box stores.
