Excise taxes down

Motor vehicle excise taxes are down or flat in cities and towns across the state as more people hold onto their old cars.

In Maine, 68% of the population owns vehicles six years or older, which are taxed at the lowest rate possible, VillageSoup.com reported. In Scarborough, where the excise tax pot is expected to be down $100,000 at the end of the fiscal year on June 30, Town Manager Ron Owens said, "People are either buying less-expensive cars, fewer cars or older cars."

Vehicle excise taxes are municipalities' second or third largest source of money after property taxes, the news site said. Portland has reported the biggest dip: It's down about $1 million in excise tax money, partly due to the loss of fleets like the Enterprise rental car franchise and Nappi Distributors.
