Fireworks revenue triples expectations

The state collected more than three times the expected taxes from fireworks sales, which totaled around $7.6 million over the past 12 months.

The Associated Press reported the tax revenue on those sales totaled $380,000 for the 12-month period ending May 31, beating projections that legalizing the sale of fireworks would generate about $120,000 in taxes a year.

Those numbers are expected to increase this year because an estimated six new fireworks stores have opened since the last Fourth of July holiday, when demand for fireworks peaks.

Fireworks became legal in Maine on Jan. 1, 2012.
