South Portland-based coffee shop chain Aroma Joe’s has opened at 28 Haskell Road with a new prototype building.
The shop will employ 25 to 30 people and is the second Aroma Joe's to open in Bangor under the leadership of franchisees Bob Brennan and Aaron Wiswell. The owners opened the first Bangor location at 444 Main St. in April.
“We have been incredibly excited to see the demand for Aroma Joe’s in Bangor, and we are confident that both locations will be incredibly successful,” said Brennan.
“We’re proud to be a part of the Bangor community, and we’re looking forward to establishing various local partnerships, charitable initiatives, and other community involvement at both of our Bangor shops.”
South Portland-based Aroma Joe's has 125 locations, from Maine to Florida.
In Bangor, the new drive-thru shop will offer Aroma Joe's typical fare, including coffee, espresso, energy drinks, soft drinks and food options.
But the 1,500-square-foot drive-thru and coffeehouse location is the first of the new prototype stores Aroma Joe’s will roll out over the coming year.
Jessica Belanger, Aroma Joe’s manager of design and construction, told Mainebiz that Aroma Joe’s buildings have followed a traditional New England aesthetic in its legacy market, but the design is now evolving for the future.
"The new prototype model is more universally appealing in all markets, both in terms of function and aesthetics," said Belanger. "In addition, this style of building is more cost-effective to build since it is a simpler design and is faster to construct."
She says the new design features a more vibrant color palette and large, bold graphics to better highlight the brand.
Belanger said that all new ground-up builds will follow this prototype. The next new prototype location will be in Sabattus.
"In Maine and New Hampshire, you may continue to see our traditional models under construction, but these markets will also begin to pivot to the new prototype as we move into 2026," said Belanger. "Aroma Joe’s will also construct shops in partnership in locations with other retail establishments and will continue to renovate existing buildings as part of our construction development plan in the years to come.”
Aroma Joe’s launched in 2000 in New Hampshire and then moved to Maine. The company is a franchising business that has expanded primarily in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York and Connecticut, but there are also franchisees in Florida.
