Friday Food Insider: National recognition for a Maine food truck

Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck social media Portland Maine chef Tony DiPhillipo slings gourmet vegan junk food from his food truck.

Maine may be the the land of lobster rolls, but how about a vegan hot dog featuring seitan and sauerkraut? The one-of-a-kind concoction, crafted by a Maine food truck business, has been recognized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck,  owned by Tony DiPhillipo, was ranked one of the “Top Vegan Dogs of Summer 2023.” The list showcased 10 vegan hot dogs and sausages from food trucks to restaurants across the country. PETA is an international animal rights nonprofit based in Norfolk, Va.

“We are excited and honored to be recognized as having one of the top 10 vegan hot dogs in the country by PETA,” said DiPhillipo. “Nothing, however, beats the daily interactions with our customers and our community. Making people happy is what really keeps us going!”

Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck's Rad Dawg

The award-winning Rad Dawg is a fan-favorite, a field-roast frankfurter, a wholesome veggie dog made with seitan, apple cider vinegar, tomato paste, and spices. It is topped with sauerkraut and our homemade Bavarian mustard and served on a grilled sub.

“The Rad Dawg is a tasty twist on a summertime classic and the perfect animal-friendly answer to any comfort food craving,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “All the award wieners on PETA’s national Top 10 list prove that compassion is a delicious business.”

The Pingala Cafe, a Burlington, Vt., shop noted for its Bahn Me Dawg, was the only other honoree from New England.

PETA encourages people to choose vegan and never eat any foods made of animal products. The top dogs featured many unique, fun hot dogs and sausages, showing that vegan options have never been tastier or easier to find. This year’s top vegan dogs are unranked because they’re all equally delicious, said a spokesperson from PETA.

The winners are picked based on input from patrons, including PETA staff and supporters, online reviews, and more.

The Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck, which serves all vegan “junk food,” can be spotted around the area by its bright, 1980’s looking purple graphics. Check Instagram (@totallyawesomeveganfoodtruck) for locations and schedules.

The food truck offers a tasty vegan menu with multiple styles of dogs, from the 80’s Drive-In Dawg topped with ketchup, mustard, pickles, and minced onions to the Korean Street Dawg smothered in Korean BBQ baked beans, house-made spicy Asian slaw, scallions, and Sriracha drizzle.
