Goodwill plans flagship store

Goodwill Industries of Northern New England is planning to open its largest retail location in South Portland next year, which will create as many as 50 jobs.

Goodwill yesterday finalized a lease for the former Circuit City building on Maine Mall Road in South Portland, Craig Young, a broker at CB Richard Ellis/The Boulos Co., told Mainebiz. Randy Finamore, Goodwill's senior vice president of retail, said the 27,620-square-foot space will be the largest of its 26 retail locations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, and is part of the organization's plan to open a store in the highly trafficked Maine Mall area. "We were looking to open a flagship store in the greater Portland area," he told Mainebiz.

Finamore said the company is currently reviewing bids for a renovation of the building and will likely open next spring with as many as 50 employees.

The building has been empty since this spring, when the bankrupt electronics chain closed all of its 567 stores in the United States, including stores in Bangor and Augusta.
