Verso gets money for energy work

Nearly $10 million in stimulus money is slated to help fund energy efficiency projects at two Maine paper mills.

Memphis, Tenn.-based Verso Paper has been awarded a $9,356,177 Recovery Act grant for waste energy recovery projects at its two mills in Jay and Bucksport, as well as a third mill in Sartell, Minn., according to a press release from Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Verso will use the money to implement a total of 12 waste energy recovery projects at the mills, including three at the Jay mill and four in Bucksport, according to the Bangor Daily News. The projects will reuse heat and water to power other mill operations, Bill Cohen, a Verso spokesman, told the paper. Verso will match the grant with $9.7 in company funding.

The grant is part of $155 million the federal Department of Energy is awarding for industrial efficiency projects in the country. Verso's energy efficiency projects are expected to save 1.28 trillion Btu annually, according to the press release.
