Gorham firm bought by Finnish elevator co.

A Finnish company has acquired Northeast Elevator Services of Gorham as its makes its first foray into Maine.

Kone, a nearly $7 billion elevator and escalator company based in Espoo, Finland, purchased the independent company Monday for an undisclosed sum, according to a press release. Operations will be combined under the Kone name in coming months, and all six of Northeast's employees will be retained.

"Northeast Elevator Services has built a reputation for delivering quality in all aspects of their service business including maintenance, repair and modernization," Vance Tang, Kone's area director for the Americas, said in the release. "Their strong team has steadily grown its service base during the past five years."

Kone, which has North American corporate headquarters in Moline, Ill., employs nearly 35,000 people worldwide and reported net sales of $6.8 billion last year. Northeast Elevator Services, formerly of Scarborough, was founded in 1992 and sold to Jamie and Cristy Meecham of Gorham in March 2004, according to published reports.
