Grant to help fund Snowman expansion

Snowman Printing in Hermon will receive a $200,000 Community Development Block Grant, money that will be used to expand the printing facility and create 10 new jobs.

The 77-year-old printing and mailing company opened a 17,500-square-foot facility on Printer's Drive nine years ago with the expectation that it would grow, says President Ed Armstrong. That day has come, as the grant will help fund a 7,450-square-foot expansion.

"It took us a year and a lot of work to obtain that grant, but we're very excited about it," says Armstrong. "We're in the process now of meeting with engineers and designers, and hope to begin building this spring."

The new facility will expand the existing printing and mailing operation, and provide a new home for REMM Financial Services, a spinoff company formed two years ago that provides imaging of highly secure documents such as checks and other financial instruments for clients like Bangor Savings Bank and the town of Hampden. Armstrong says the security systems that have to be built into such an operation are very sophisticated and necessary to preserve REMM's SAS 70 certification to handle sensitive financial documents. The new facility will help the growth of REMM, he says.

"We are working with some other companies who are close to coming on board," he says of prospective REMM clients.

The grant announcement, made Wednesday by the state Department of Economic and Community Development, is part of nearly $600,000 in third round funding of CDB grants awarded in Maine. A total of $13 million is expected to be awarded in the 2009 program year.
