Greater Portland Board of Realtors to host flood risk class

The Greater Portland Board of Realtors will host a continuing education class called “Understanding flood risk: How some Maine communities are preparing for the future,” on Oct. 6, from 2-5 p.m., at the Portland Museum of Art auditorium.

A reception afterward will be held at Downtown Social, at 128 Free St.

The class, open to all Maine Realtors, responds to back-to-back storms in Maine.

The December 2023 Grinch Storm caused the worst river flooding since the 1800s. In January 2024, two coastal storms damaged or destroyed 60% of the working waterfront as well as buildings, infrastructure and topography with record-breaking water levels and storm surge. The estimated damage to public infrastructure in Maine was $90 million.

The response along the coast included assessing the costs to rebuild with higher resilience.

The Greater Portland Board of Realtors’ class invites local experts to detail the community response to rebuilding better, through measures such as elevating sea walls, piers, wharves, roads and bridges; introducing nature-based infrastructure; and limiting floodplain development.

Speakers will include Julia Bassett Schwerin of Advisors Living Real Estate; Peter Slovinsky, geologist with the Maine Geological Survey; Brian Ambrette, director, state Resilience Office; Satchel Toole, commercial and municipal program manager, Efficiency Maine Trust; Troy Moon, Portland's sustainability manager; Julie Rosenbach, sustainability manager, city of South Portland.
