Hannaford Supermarkets, based in Scarborough, is the "Best Empoyer" in Maine of companies that have 500 employees or more, according to a recent Forbes listing of America's best employers by state.

Second on the list is Westbrook-based IDEXX Laboratories, followed by TJX Companies, based in Framingham, Mass., and owner of retailers TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Homegoods and other stores.

It's the first time Forbes has released the list. The business magazine partnered with market research company Statista to survey more than 80,000 full- and part-time employees working for companies that employed at least 500. Those responding rated willingness to recommend their employer to friends and family, and also evaluated other employers in their industry and geographic region.

About 40% of Maine's private businesses have more than 500 employees, according to the Small Business Administration. Hannaford, part of the international Ahold Delhaize group, employs about 10,000 in the state and 27,000 at 181 stores, with 63 in Maine, and the others in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

Hannaford was picked fifth in the New Hampshire rankings, where it employs 4,000.

“To be recognized by our associates and our community as a choice employer is a proud moment for Hannaford,” said Margo Peffer, vice president of human resources at Hannaford. “We believe we work with the best team of associates in retail, and their feedback, ideas, and care for customers is what Hannaford is all about.”

The company is the only grocery retailer in Maine or New Hampshire to earn a rank on the Forbes list, and one of 313 companies nationwide to earn a top rating in more than one state. Hannaford is Maine's second-largest company by number of employees, after Portland-based MaineHealth.

The other companies on the list, in order of their rankings, are IDEXX, with 8,377 employees; TJX with 235,000; General Dynamics (Bath Iron Works), based in Falls Church, Va., with 105,600; Dollar Tree, Chesapeake, Va., 182,100; U.S. Department of Defense, Arlington, Va., employee number not given; Walmart, Benton, Ark., 2.2 million; TD Bank, Cherry Hill, N.J., 26,000.

In its list, Forbes didn't specify the number of workers per state, so the magazine's employment figures are overall estimates.
