The Holy Donut, a Portland-based maker of Maine potato donuts, has launched a line of gluten-free frozen treats being sold at 74 Hannaford stores in three states and wider distribution in the coming months.
The initial rollout covers all of Hannaford stores in Maine and New Hampshire and select locations in northern Massachusetts, with plans to cover the grocery retailer's entire network “soon,” according to Katie Mackie, Holy Donut’s marketing manager.
“Right now, we’re focused on making this launch a success in Hannaford stores across northern New England,” she told Mainebiz. “Long term, we’re exploring opportunities to expand both regionally and beyond.”
The Holy Donut, led by co-owner and CEO Jeff Buckwalter, already sells three-pack boxes of frozen donuts at six Hannaford stores in Maine.
The new gluten-free singles — in Dark Chocolate Sea Salt, Fresh Lemon and Maple Glaze — come on top of fresh gluten-free treats sold in Holy Donut shops.
“Our gluten-free donuts have been a fan favorite for years,” Mackie said. “This launch allows us to make them more inclusive and accessible, especially for those who don’t have many options in the bakery aisle.”
The company makes all of its gluten-free donuts in a dedicated facility at its Arundel location to ensure safety and prevent cross-contamination. It also has two locations in Portland and one each in Scarborough and Brunswick.
While the company's workforce fluctuates seasonally, it currently is staffed by 80 employees, Mackie said.
Signaling more expansion ahead, Buckwalter said that “we continue to invest in our gluten-free manufacturing to scale and introduce new flavors to meet the insatiable consumer demand.”
He added that “we are humbled by the overwhelming response and are excited to continue providing this one-of-a-kind, wholesome Maine treat to more grocers, markets, airports and universities across the country.”
Melanie Laflamme, bakery category manager for Hannaford, said the partnership with Holy Donut aligns with the retailer’s commitment to supporting local growers and suppliers.
“We’re excited to make it even easier for all of our customers to enjoy the outstanding products from the Holy Donut,” she said in a statement emailed to Mainebiz. “As a company with deep roots in Maine, we’re proud to offer delicious, high-quality products made right here in our home state.”
