Health centers in Cumberland, Piscataquis counties get $2.1M

Health centers in Cumberland and Piscataquis counties will receive a combined $2.1 million in federal funding to support their care for underserved Mainers.

Greater Portland Health, which operates nine offices in Portland and South Portland, will receive $1,492,719 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to a news release. Hometown Health Center, formerly known as Sebasticook Family Doctors, has been awarded $635,688 to support its services in Dexter and Newport.

Both health care providers are Federally Qualified Health Centers and provide a wide range of services including primary medical care, behavioral health and dental care. Both utilize sliding-scale fees based on income, allowing access for many Mainers who might not otherwise be able to afford care.

“Access to quality, affordable health care is crucial to the well-being of Maine communities,” said U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, in a joint statement. “This important funding will help [the health centers] continue to provide cost-effective primary and preventive care that is critical to many Mainers in Cumberland and Piscataquis counties.”

The awards were made through HRSA’s Health Center Cluster Program, which is tasked with improving access to health care by building healthy communities, strengthening the health care workforce and achieving health equity.
