The 160-year-old Naples landmark known as the Augustus Bove House has reopened under new ownership as the Hamilton House, an inn.
The 5,000-square-foot estate underwent significant structural and design updates. In addition to a complete remodel of each guest room in the inn, the building’s foundation, plumbing and electrical systems were all upgraded.
Cost of the renovations totaled over $700,000.
The original building was constructed by Washington Bray as a two-story brick farmhouse. In the late 1870s, it was converted into the town’s only hotel by George W. Hall.
Naples native Augustus Bove, a Republican who served two terms in the state House of Representatives, bought the property in 1930 for his retirement home. Bove, who died in 1967, was credited with getting approval for the original wharf on Long Lake, opposite his property, in 1931.
In 1984, the property was converted to a bed and breakfast.
The Hamilton family purchased it in April 2022.
“Our goal throughout the process was to enhance the guest experience, while preserving the soul of the original house,” said owner Suzy Hamilton. “Our amazing team of workers accomplished just that. Each room has been beautifully reimagined and honors the home’s Victorian roots through modern design.”
The Hamilton House sits on the Naples Causeway opposite Long Lake, steps from the boardwalk. It can accommodate up to 26 guests in 11 bedrooms with private bathrooms. There’s a spacious dining room, a private theater, a billiards room and outdoor patios.
Carlee Cardwell, founder and principal of Alexandria, Va..-based Dambly Designs, led the interior revision. Hamilton said Cardwell’s experience with historic properties and her talent for blending modern aesthetics within a Victorian framework brought Hamilton’s vision to life.
Throughout the house, the redesign honors the essence of Maine through curated materials, textures and storytelling design.
“The Hamilton House has been an integral part of Naples’ history for more than 160 years and we’re committed to ensuring it continues for generations to come,” Hamilton said.
