Holiday weekend traffic slips 3%

As predicted, traffic on the Maine Turnpike dropped over Memorial Day weekend compared to the same weekend last year.

Overall, a total of 838,029 transactions were recorded on the turnpike from Friday to Monday, a 3.3% decrease compared to Memorial Day weekend 2010, according to the Maine Turnpike Authority. Traffic at the York toll plaza fell 5.1%. Last week, the Maine Center for Business & Economic Research at the University of Southern Maine predicted the number of vehicles traveling through the York toll plaza would drop 6% compared to the previous year, due to gas prices that were the highest Memorial Day weekend prices in a decade.
