Hospital faulted in patient's death

A month-long investigation into the death of a patient has concluded that Down East Community Hospital in Machias was negligent.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a division of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently released a 73-page report that includes a "statement of deficiencies" for the hospital and a "plan of correction," according to the Bangor Daily News. On Jan. 2, the body of Eastport resident Reid Emery, 61, was found in a snowbank near the hospital. Emery had been discharged the night of Jan. 1.

CMS found the hospital did not comply with Medicare conditions of participation and did not meet the needs of the patient. According to the report, Emery was discharged after receiving a cocktail of medication that impairs cognition, and was not checked on by the physician who approved his discharge, the paper reported. The plan of correction will be adopted no later than Feb. 11, the paper said. No legal action has yet been taken against the hospital on behalf of Emery.
