Inc. 5000 list has a few surprises among 12 Maine businesses named fastest-growing in US

As in 2020, a dozen Maine businesses have been named to the new Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies. But this year’s edition of the prestigious annual ranking, published Wednesday, is the first to reflect the impact of the pandemic and its unprecedented business challenges.

This is no repeat performance.

To be sure, nine of the 12 companies on the 2021 list made the 2020 roster, including the fastest-growing business in the state, Origin. It ranks No. 215 nationally this year, vaulting from No. 362 in 2020.

The Farmington-based maker of apparel and fitness products, which ranked second in Maine last year, reported revenue growth of 2,034% over the past three years. In 2020, Origin’s three-year growth rate was 1,253%.

Inc. ranks the companies annually according to the percentage of their self-reported revenue increase over the previous three years. To make the list, businesses must have had revenue of at least $2 million in the most recent year, and be privately held, independent companies, not subsidiaries or corporate divisions.

The 2021 list includes some other eye-openers.

Returning to the Inc. 5000 after a few years off is Landry/French Construction Co., which ranks No. 2,961 nationally and No. 8 in Maine, with growth of 130%. The Scarborough company, whose president and CEO were named 2020 Mainebiz Business Leaders of the Year, made the Inc. 5000 in 2016 and 2017.

Another construction company, Portland-based Barrett Made, this year enters the Inc. 5000 for the first time, at No. 3,812, with 85% growth. The other newcomer is Marina Holdings LLC, a group of marine facilities headquartered in Yarmouth, that comes in at No. 4,771, with 48% growth.

A big change this year from the 2020 Inc. ranking is the growth of the Maine honorees as a group, despite forced shutdowns and public health emergencies.

Combined revenues for all 12 businesses this year are $483.8 million, according to Inc., nearly double the total for last year’s dozen honorees, $245.7 million. Together the 2021 recipients added 1,065 new jobs over the three-year reporting period, compared to last year’s total of 789.

Reaction to the rankings

“I couldn’t be prouder of our hard-working crew. Last year was extremely difficult for a number of reasons. Our team not only stepped up to the plate, they excelled, helping to propel us to record growth. Despite the many challenges we faced, they continued to give it their all every day and this award is proof of their commitment and determination.” — Steve Arnold, owner, Marina Holdings LLC

“SaviLinx is honored to be on the Inc. 5000 list for the fifth consecutive year — this year is particularly meaningful as our whole team worked tremendously hard throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to serve our customers while continuing to grow at a rapid pace. I am extremely proud of our team for launching several high-profile new contracts and assisting our existing customer base without missing a beat.” — Heather D. Blease, founder and CEO, SaviLinx

"Like many companies who were challenged by COVID-19, we were happy at the end of 2020 to show any growth, and pleased by the fact that our three-year growth rate was enough for us to again make this prestigious list. None of our success over the past year would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our crew, who not only continued to design, manufacture, market, ship and sell our products made from recycled sails, but also pitched in to make and distribute face masks when they were needed most at the early stages of the pandemic." — Don Oakes, CEO, Sea Bags

“The 2021 Inc. 5000 list feels like one of the most important rosters of companies ever compiled. Building one of the fastest-growing companies in America in any year is a remarkable achievement. Building one in the crisis we’ve lived through is just plain amazing.” — Scott Omelianuk, Inc. editor-in-chief
