Industry groups rail against beverage tax

Representatives of Maine's restaurant and beverage industries may launch a petition to veto recent tax hikes on beer, wine and soda.

Dick Groton, president of the Maine Restaurant Association, this week began working with the Maine Beverage Association and other trade groups to develop a petition against the higher taxes, which include a new, 40% tax per gallon of soda syrup, Groton told Mainebiz this morning. Gov. John Baldacci approved the taxes last week to raise money for the state's Dirigo Health program.

Groton sent a survey about the taxes to his group's 800 members on Monday. If members want to launch a petition drive, they'll have 90 days to gather the 55,087 signatures required to put the veto on the ballot this November, according to State House News Service.
