Irving Oil enters trucked CNG market

The New Brunswick-based Irving Oil has entered the market for trucked natural gas in Maine, where it has one other competitor.

The Bangor Daily News reported Irving delivered its first truckload of natural gas Friday to the McCain Foods processing plant in Easton.

Darren Gillis, a general manager at Irving Energy, told the paper that Irving began crafting its plans to deliver natural gas by truck 18 months ago.

The company now delivers gas from its compressor station in Lincoln, New Brunswick, which receives natural gas from the Sable Offshore Energy Project in Nova Scotia via the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline.

In Maine, the Boston-based Xpress Natural Gas has been making inroads with clients for trucked natural gas since announcing a partnership with Dead River Co. in January and with Maine Natural Gas last month. XNG currently has a distribution hub in Baileyville and is eying others in the state.

Suppliers of natural gas delivered by truck say it allows customers to take advantage of low prices sooner than the alternative of waiting for connections to a natural gas pipeline.
