The Maine Redevelopment Land Bank Authority has awarded a $25,000 grant to the town of Jonesport to be put toward rescuing a derelict property at 46 Main St.
The funding will be used to repair the roof and stabilize both the interior and exterior ahead of the winter season.
Once a cornerstone of local commerce, the circa-1900 property originally served as a marine supply store.
The 2,250-square-foot building sits near the waterfront in Jonesport, which is a commercial fishing hub at the tip of a 12-mile peninsula in Washington County.
After years of vacancy and decline, the town officially took ownership of the property in March. With stabilization underway, the town continues to explore plans to transform the building into a functional space that will benefit both residents and visitors.
“We’re deeply thankful to the Maine Redevelopment Land Bank Authority for their generous and impactful support,” said Denise Cilley of the Jonesport select board. “We look forward to exploring what is possible with this newly acquired property and are grateful for much needed time to prepare a comprehensive list of feasible options for Jonesport to consider, and vote on, at next year’s annual town meeting.”
“We’re excited to help communities like Jonesport act on vacant and underutilized properties,” said Tuck O’Brien, executive director of the Maine Redevelopment Land Bank Authority. “Every stabilized building is an opportunity for economic renewal and reinvestment.”
The Maine Redevelopment Land Bank Authority was established by the state legislature in 2022. The organization accesses federal funding to help stabilize and rehabilitate abandoned, environmentally hazardous and functionally obsolete properties to spur economic development and strengthen property values.
