Some 14 craft brewers so far have signed up for the Kennebec Valley Brewfest, which will be held as part of Kennebec River Day in Augusta Saturday, June 29.

This will be the second year of the brewfest, and Katie Doherty, president and CEO of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce said that more brewers are expected to sign up. Last year, the first year the brewfest was part of Kennebec River Day, 11 breweries took part. Distilleries have been added to this year's lineup.

"Last year was our first year and it was a huge success," Doherty said Friday. "We are excited to expand it to bring more people to the region. We have brewers this year that were not even in existence last year, which speaks to the growth of this industry."

She said aside from distilleries being added, the space for the brewfest has doubled and tickets this year include unlimited tastings.

Scheduled to be at the event, which is in Mill Park at the north end of downtown, are Bigelow Brewing, of Skowhegan; Black Pug Brewing, of Brunswick; Chadwick's Craft Spirits, of Pittston; Cushnoc Brewing Co., of Augusta; Definitive Brewing, of Portland; Flight Deck Brewing, of Brunswick; Grateful Grain Brewing Co., of Monmouth; The Liberal Cup, of Hallowell; Lost Valley Brewing, of Auburn; Stars & Stripes Brewing, of Freeport; Tumbledown Brewing, of Farmington; Two Gramps Brewing, of Gardiner; van der Brew, of Winthrop; Waterville Brewing Co., of Waterville.

The addition of the brewfest last year is the latest change to the festival that began more than four decades ago as the Whatever Race, which celebrated the cleaner river following passage of the Clean Water Act and the end to the log drives that clogged it every spring. Kennebec River Day also includes live music, food vendors, lawn games and children's activities.

Kennebec River Day is part of the larger three-week Whatever Family Festival, which has more than 100 businesses taking part or sponsoring events, according to the chamber. "The Whatever Family Festival is an opportunity for people from near and far to experience the Kennebec Valley through a variety of free events," the chamber said in a news release.

The events, which are held in a variety of areas communities, begin June 12 and end July 4.
