Lafayette calls to keep Bangor Auditorium

Maine hotel magnate Danny Lafayette is calling to save the Bangor Auditorium weeks before the downtown building is slated for demolition.

WCSH6 reported that Lafayette made his plea Monday to the Bangor City Council, arguing that the 58-year-old building could still host conventions or other events while larger concerts are held at the Cross Insurance Center, which is under construction next door.

The Bangor Auditorium is slated for demolition at the end of May to provide parking for the new arena.

The news station reported that city councilors had doubts about keeping the Bangor Auditorium open, but the city manager's office was looking into Lafayette's suggestion. City officials estimate it would cost around $160,000 per year in maintenance costs to keep the facility open.
