Lawmakers fill small budget hole

State lawmakers have approved a bill that fills a $30 million budget gap, but are still tackling a larger shortfall.

The House and Senate gave final approval to the bill yesterday and sent it to Gov. John Baldacci for his signature, according to the Associated Press. The bill calls for the largest savings to come from a reduction in bond debt service. State services won't be affected, legislators told the AP.

The Legislature has since the summer been working on ways to close the gap in the 2011 state budget. Lawmakers are still working to close a $438 million budget gap and have wrapped up public hearings on Baldacci's budget plan, according to Capitol News Service.
