LePage's view on ocean energy clarified
Speaking at an international conference on ocean energy in Portland yesterday, the director of Maine's Office of Energy Independence and Security said that Gov. Paul LePage's administration supports the developing industry, contrary to media reports suggesting otherwise.
Kenneth Fletcher explained that LePage does, however, oppose policies or subsidies that would increase the above-average rates that Maine electric customers already pay, the Portland Press Herald reported. The administration has made efforts to be welcoming to those developing offshore wind opportunities so that Maine does not come across as unfriendly to investors, the paper reported.
The EnergyOcean International conference attracted hundreds of people in the wind, tidal and wave-power fields. Fletcher, along with other speakers, said that Maine's offshore energy potential lies not just in the production of renewable energy, but also with the development of the state's manufacturing base that could build energy components for the global market.
