Maria Hadjiyane will serve as the first COO of Maine Behavioral Healthcare.

Hadjiyane is currently the vice president of ambulatory services for MBH. In her new role, she will be responsible for the operations of all MBH facilities and programs, including psychiatric hospital Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook.

Hadjiyane also will be in charge of the company’s workflow strategy and organization of all essential business processes. The role of COO was created following the retirement announcement by Mary Jane Krebs, currently president of Spring Harbor Hospital, who plans to step down at the end of this year.

“Maria has proven herself to be an energetic and motivated leader who is dedicated to our vision of building the healthiest communities in America,” said Kelly Barton, president of MBH. “We are very fortunate to have her in this new role.”

“We have benefited immeasurably from Mary Jane’s leadership at Spring Harbor,” said Barton. “Her retirement offers us an opportunity to think about a more unified structure for our organization. This new role will foster improved communication and collaboration across the organization, along with smoother operational decision-making and execution.”

Hadjiyane joined MBH in August 2020 as vice president of ambulatory services. Prior to that, she served as the senior director of behavioral health adult ambulatory services with Inova Health System in Virginia.

She received her master's degree in counseling psychology from Bowie State University in Maryland and a Ph.D. in counseling from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Maine Behavioral Health is part of MaineHealth, the largest health care system in the state serving 1.1 million residents in Maine and New Hampshire.

Editor's Note: This article has been revised to clarify that the role of chief operating officer at Maine Behavioral Healthcare is a newly created one, although MBH has used the title in the past.
