From aquaculture to specialty foods and beverages, more than 30 Maine food and agricultural businesses are slated to receive a combined $2.5 million for equipment upgrades.
The money was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program.
The funds are to support post-harvest equipment purchases that boost capacity in aggregation, processing, manufacturing, storage, transport, wholesaling and distribution for food and beverage products made or grown in Maine.
“This funding is a direct response to the needs we’ve heard from Maine’s farmers, food producers and processors,” said Amanda Beal, the state's commissioner for agriculture, conservation and forestry.
By investing in specialized equipment, we’re helping strengthen local and regional food supply chains, expand market opportunities and increase the availability of Maine-produced food," she added. "These grants represent a meaningful step toward a more resilient and self-reliant food system.”
Award amounts range from $10,000 to $100,000.
