With a record number of drivers on the road expected for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend, it might be comforting to know that Maine ranks among the safest states to drive, a study shows.

Munley Law, a Pennsylvania-based personal injury firm, ranked Maine at No. 13 on its study of the Safest and Most Dangerous States to Drive this Labor Day weekend.

It cited recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the FBI and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Labor Day is the nation's second deadliest weekend for driving, behind July 4th.

In 2023, 511 people were killed in car crashes, up from 496 the year before, and 36% included drunk drivers.

With barbecues and parties as a central feature, it's not surprising that alcohol consumption is a primary factor. Combine that with the volume of drivers on the road and you have a recipe for a dangerous weekend.

New York is the safest state to drive, while New Mexico is the most dangerous, according to Munley Law.

In Maine, the most dangerous (but also most highly traveled road) is I-95, with nine fatal crashes in 2023, Munley Law reported.

Factors considered

Seven factors were analyzed in all 50 states and D.C., such as traffic fatalities, DUIs, speeding and pedestrian fatalities per capita.

Key Findings in Maine:

  • Motor vehicle traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents in 2024: 12.74 (No. 32)
  • DUI arrests per 100,000 residents 2024: 301.35 (No. 38)
  • Fatal Crashes with blood alcohol level of 0.08 or above per 100,000 residents 2023: 2.49 (No. 13)
  • Fatal crashes involving speeding per 100,000 residents 2023: 2.63 (No. 18)
  • Pedestrians killed in vehicle accidents per 100,000 residents 2023: 1.35 (No. 15)
  • Motor carrier traffic violations per 100,000 residents 2024: 319.5 (No. 35)
  • Uninsured motorists 2023: 5.7% (No. 1)
