Maine unemployment for July extends sub 4% trend

Maine Department of Labor reported the state’s unemployment rate for July was 3.7%, making it the 22nd consecutive month the statewide unemployment rate has been 4% or less. It’s the second longest stretch of below-4% unemployment in more than 40 years.
The preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.7% for July was up slightly from 3.5% in June and down from 4% one year ago. The number of unemployed was down 1,500 over the year to 26,200 people out of work in Maine.
The U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 4.3% for July was little changed from 4.4% for June and down from 4.9% one year ago. The New England unemployment rate averaged 4.1%.
July unemployment rate estimates for other states in the region were 2.8% in New Hampshire, 3.1% in Vermont, 4.3% in Massachusetts, 4.3% in Rhode Island, and 5% in Connecticut.
The unemployment rate was below the statewide average in the Portland-South Portland metro area (2.8%) and close to the average in the Lewiston-Auburn (3.4%) and Bangor (3.7%) metro areas.
