MaineHealth affiliate in Norway plans $10M addition

Western Maine Health Care Corp., a Norway-based MaineHealth affiliate, is planning a $10 million expansion as part of its push to increase outpatient care services.

The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that Western Maine Health announced construction plans for an $8.2 million, 25,000-square-foot building on Pikes Hill Road, where doctors’ offices from other locations will merge. The company said it will also renovate its Ripley Medical Building for $1.8 million and move its pediatrics unit there.

The newspaper noted that the expansion represents Western Maine Health’s shift in focus to outpatient care and more specifically, the patient-centered medical home health care model — which was the focus of a Mainebiz feature earlier this year.

"The shift of providing care in an outpatient setting rather than in a hospital continues to accelerate, and this project will allow us to better meet this requirement," David Preble, Western Maine Health board chairman, said in a prepared statement to the newspaper.

Western Maine Health is expected to break ground on the project, still in its planning stages, next spring and will require a site review by the Norway Planning Board.
