MERC sale hangs on DEP decision

The city of Biddeford will not close on its $6.65 million purchase of an incinerator in town until an environmental cleanup plan is approved, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The city and Maine Energy Recovery Co., owned by Casella Waste Systems, had pushed back an original closing deadline from Nov. 15 to today.

Samantha DePoy-Warren, spokeswoman for the state's Department of Environmental Protection, told the paper that she expects a favorable decision on the cleanup plan in the coming days that would allow the sale to proceed.

The paper reported that Casella and the city filed a joint request for DEP approval of a cleanup plan for the incinerator site on Nov. 15.

Earlier this month, city and Casella officials said they delayed the sale closure pending the collection of all test results from the site.
